Using fabrics effectively

Whilst your fabric choice should not be the first thing you do in creating your

interior design, it is very important in your overall scheme and should be given

plenty of thought and consideration.

Fabrics are a great way to look at colour and review how you can combine colours

and patterns. In fact, as paint swatches are often too small to really appreciate the

full effect of a colour, it is often easier to achieve this with a plain piece of fabric.

Fabrics are a great way to explain your ideas to others and for them to share your

enthusiasm, see your vision and contribute their own ideas.

There are thousands of fabrics available at a large range of prices. They can be

bought from a variety of shops from department stores to specialist fabric shops,

as well as from the Internet, exhibitions or design centres. The most important

factor with all these is that you do not buy any fabric without seeing it or touching

it in the environment for which it is intended. This has already been covered in the

mood board section, where the different types of samples available to you can be

ordered so that you can see exactly how it will look in your home. Your mood board

then allows you to see how it looks with all your other choices. The light and other

colours that surround it can seriously affect the look of a fabric, which in the shop

may have appeared completely different.
